This is "The Sherer Counter" or more commonly known as a seed counter. It is not in pristine condition, I purchased a home several years ago and it was being used as a work bench in a garage. The guy painted cars in this garage so the cabinet got some abuse. Fortunately he covered the oak top with plywood. I believe this cabinet was used in the "Logan's Grocery" store (1917-1941) on the corner of 3rd St. and Broadway in what is now called the Logan Building (downtown Bismarck). I believe this to be true based on the remnants of a handwritten grocery receipt I found hidden under a drawer and the hand written date on one of the drawers that fits the timeline.

I once had aspirations of refurbishing this beautiful cabinet but the truth is it's unlikely to happen and I hope someone else sees what I see when they look at it. These cabinets came in size from 4' up to 18' in length. This cabinet is 12' in length with 23 drawers. There was a glass display that faced the customer and each drawers display held a sample of the drawers contents that the grocer would then open and scoop out the desired amount. Anyway, the glass displays are gone but can be purchased and/or duplicated. Each drawer has a heavy-duty pull of cast iron with the name "SHERER" displayed. These pulls bring a premium on eBay when and if you see them. 16 of the 23 pulls on this cabinet are complete ($300-$400 in value). The original cabinet logos are visible on each end. Now the bad news, as you will see in the pics the drawers have paint drips, a few chipped corners and the cabinet is filthy. All drawers are complete but in varying degrees of needing attention. Notice one has been sanded by me to see if the paint and finish could be removed. The paint and grime removed exposed a beautiful piece of oak waiting for a new stain finish.

That is assuming anyone out there wants to embrace this labor of love and try to revive her majesty. If someone is just interested in a solid quartersawn oak workbench with a bunch of storage that works too. Approximate dimensions are 12' x 30" top and stands about 34" high. Units like this in good condition have sold from $7k to $13k. This is not one of those but restored they are still very desirable and bring a premium. Used as kitchen islands or business displays or a work bench it will useful and solid. It is very heavy and I would assist loading with skid steer or heavy dollies. I would like to find a new home for this 100+ year old cabinet with ties to the community. Asking $400. If you would like to see it contact me and I can make arrangements. Daytime only as the building it's in has no lights. Thank you.
